The light in our hallway runs on a motion sensor. It's been broken for weeks, clicks on for no reason, and the super keeps saying he'll get to it. So I stopped noticing.
Tonight I'm up because I can't sleep and the kitchen tap drips. I hear the click. The strip of light under my door goes bright. I wait for it to time out. Ninety seconds, then dark.
It clicks again. Bright. Dark. Bright.
I tell myself it's the sensor. Faulty. The super's coming Tuesday. I've said this to myself so many times it doesn't even feel like lying anymore.
Then I do the thing you do. I put my eye to the gap under the door, the cold draft on my face, and I look at the light from down there.
The sensor only fires when something in the hall moves.
I've been telling myself it's broken because the other thing is that it's working.
