The Door That's Always Warm
Unit 214's door runs warm every night on my rounds, and the renter tips me not to log it.
This one goes to a heavy place. If you’d rather not read it tonight, that’s a fine choice — support resources are here.
The tablet pings at 2:11, same as every night this month. After-hours entry, building C, unit 214. I don't need to walk the aisle to know which door it is. I already know it'll be warm.
Policy says log every ping and email the manager by morning. It's printed and laminated by the office door. I've logged maybe half of them since this particular renter started coming around.
He's polite. Says my name like he checked my badge once and bothered to remember it. Slides a twenty into the tip jar by the front desk on his way out, folded small, like tip jars are a normal thing for a storage facility.
Tonight I put my palm flat on 214's door before I mean to. It's warm the way a dryer vent runs warm, low and steady, for a unit with no power hookup on the lease. There's no reason for that kind of warm.
I don't open it. That was never going to be my job.
I go back to the desk and don't type the email. I take the twenty out of the jar, the shared one everyone's supposed to split at the end of the month, and put it straight into my own pocket. I haven't done that before tonight.
I don't call it hush money. I call it the desk job finally paying overtime, and I go back to my rounds.

Aisle Twelve Still Checks In
Overnight stock alone in the warehouse, a deactivated badge checks in from the freezer aisle at the same minute twice, and no one else is back there.
The Hall Light Keeps Clicking On
The motion sensor in my hallway should only trigger when something moves. After 2am, it won't stop.
Faster Route Available
My phone rerouted me off my own exit tonight, and I wasn't even using the GPS. The part I can't explain is what came after.
