Her Handwriting on the Receipt
she still leaves voicemails. i still don't play them all the way through.
i was looking for the banana bread recipe and a receipt fell out of the cookbook. milk, eggs, the good butter, and at the bottom in her writing, call the dentist. she wrote her reminders on whatever was closest. i have three missed calls from her this week i haven't called back. not because anything's wrong. i just let it ring and tell myself i'll do it tomorrow when i have more to say. the receipt is from a store that closed two years ago. i kept turning it over like the other side would have something newer on it.
she still leaves voicemails. i still don't play them all the way through. i put the receipt back in the cookbook where it was and closed it, because that felt easier than deciding what to do with it. i'll call her. i keep the thought there so i don't have to look at why i haven't.

The Risers Are Already Pulled
Six weeks after surgery I go back to choir to return a folder and find the room running fine without me, right down to my old spot on the risers.
